Terms of service

Plain terms for a small data product. Brice, trading as providercostreports.com provides this site and the API at api.providercostreports.com.

What you are buying

Access to Medicare cost report data that we have parsed, cleaned, joined and in part reconciled against audited financial statements. The source data is the CMS Healthcare Cost Report Information System (HCRIS), a public US federal dataset that anybody may download for free. You are paying for the work of making it usable, not for the data itself, and we make no claim of ownership over the underlying figures.

What you may do with it

Use it in your work, your analysis, your reports and your products. Publish figures derived from it. Quote it. We ask only that you do not resell the dataset itself as a competing bulk data product, and that you do not present our derived figures as CMS's official numbers — they are our reading of public filings.

An API key is issued to one subscriber. Sharing it with the world defeats the tiers the price depends on, and we may revoke a key that is being used that way.

Accuracy, and its limits

We are careful and we are not infallible. Figures are derived from coordinates in filed cost reports; a wrong coordinate yields a plausible wrong number. Some figures have been reconciled against audited financial statements and are marked verified; most have been screened for internal consistency only. The methodology page states exactly which is which, and we would rather you read it than trust us.

The data is provided as is. Do not use it as the sole basis for a decision that matters without checking the figures that matter against the filings themselves. We are not liable for decisions made from it, and our liability in any case is limited to what you paid us in the preceding twelve months.

Subscriptions and cancellation

Subscriptions bill monthly or annually through Stripe until cancelled. Cancel whenever you like; access continues to the end of the period you have paid for. See the refund policy.

Availability

This is a small operation. We aim to keep the API up and we do not promise an uptime figure we cannot back. If it is down, tell us — see contact.

Changes

If these terms change materially we will say so on this page. Continuing to use the service after that is acceptance.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, USA.
